Church of St. Cyril and Method in Prague 8 – Karlín

This basilica consists of 3 naves and its length is 75m. Both bell-towers are high also 75m. This church was built between 1854 and 1863 according to the plans of Viennese constructor Karl Rösner. Architect Ignac Ullmann adapted the plans of K. Rösner and supervised the construction of the church.

The foundation stone of the church was laid on the 10th of June 1854 in presence of Emperor Franz Josef I. and his wife Empress Elisabeth.

18th July 1860 –Archbishop Cardinal Schwarzenberg put a final piece into the church arch.

18th October 1863 – the church was solemnly consecrated by Cardinal Schwarzenberg at the 1000th anniversary of the arrival of St. Cyril and Method in our homeland. Many people attended this celebration.

Construction of this church was a matter of the whole nation. I time of national renascence it was supposed to show to the whole world the roots of the Christian civilisation in our lands.
